General Notes:
1.) Special Editions of Canon EOS DSLRs:
  • EOS 100D White Edition: Was announced in 11.2013 for Japan, for 05.2014 to become available in Europe (at least in Germany and UK) and for 06.2014 to become available in the US. The Japanese Edition came in a kit with a white EF 40mm F2.8 STM, a standard (black) EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM and gray shoulder strap. The European and American Editions were announced with a white EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM.
  • EOS 300D Black Edition: Was first sold exclusively in Japan, later (2004) also available in US and EU. The kit was sold including the EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 and BG-E1. There are no fancy "Black Edition" markings on the body, it's just plain black instead of silver with black rubber grip.
  • EOS 350D Silver Edition: According to relating news articles this was only sold in the UK exclusively by Jessops.com as a kit including the EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 USM (instead of the II non-USM) and camera bag. The lens came in standard color (black).
  • EOS 400D Silver Edition: Was sold in the EU and US.
  • EOS 1000D Silver Edition: Was sold in the US (Rebel XS).
  • EOS 550D Jackie Chan Eye of Dragon Edition: Was announced in 2010 for the chinese market only, limited to 2010 pieces to be produced. The kit comes with EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, leather camera case, nylon shoulder strap and leather bound photo album book. Strap, case and book are colored in olive green and have Chan Eye of Dragon logo imprints in golden letters. The body also has the Chan Eye of Dragon logo on top of the retractable flash, which as well as the program dial and camera model inscriptions is held in golden letters. The lenses are not marked in any special way. [source + pics]
  • EOS 1100D Color Editions: Being limited in numbers and initially intended exclusively for the asian markets, they also made it to Europe and the US in 2011/2012. Available are a maroon red, a metallic gray and a chocolate brown. All 3 show a dual tone design with a brighter glossy body and a slightly darker matte grip and back). Canon Australia even released a 1100D Twin IS Lens Kit limited to 2000 pieces, consisting of the red body, standard EF-S 18-55 IS II and 55-250 IS lenses, a red wide strap, Limited Edition Plate with the set number engraved (# of 2000) and a Limited Edition certificate ... and all this was delivered in a Canon Custom Aluminium Travel Case painted in the same hot red with chromed corners!!
  • EOS 1300D Gray Edition: Started selling in the US (EOS T6) in late 2016. Features a brown grip imitating leather surface structure.
2.) Not enough Special Editions for your taste? Design your very own! E.g. Foto Maerz, a german Canon authorized camera repair shop located in Hamburg, offers airbrushing your camera according to your very own design (project in cooperation with AirbrushBase Hamburg). Warranty will stay intact.
3.) Magic Lantern Firmware (as of v2.3) is a firmware tweak capable to add or enhance a huge list of features to your camera. Unlike the earlier firmware hack for the EOS 300D Magic Lantern doesn't install into the ROM, but resides on the memory card to be loaded on every camera start. Among its tweaks are:
  • Audio: audio meters, manual audio controls, selectable input source (internal, internal+external, external ...), audio monitoring via A/V cable
  • Exposure: zebras, false color, histogram, waveform, spotmeter, vectorscope
  • Focus: focus peaking, zoom while recording, trap focus, rack focus, follow focus, stack focus
  • Movies: Bitrate control, movie logging (Exif-like metadata), auto-restart after buffer overflow or 4GB limit, HDR video, advanced FPS control
  • LiveView: contrast, saturation, display gain for using LiveView in darkness
  • Cropmark Images: user-editable overlays to assist framing and composition
  • Bracketing: HDR bracketing, focus/exposure stacking
  • Timelapse: intervalometer (for photos and movies) with adjustable start delay (up to 8h), bulb ramping (manual and automatic), recording at FPS down to 0.2 FPS, silent mode
  • Astro- and night photography: bulb timer for very long exposures (up to 8h)
  • Info displays: focus and DOF info, CMOS temperature, shutter count, clock
  • Strobist: enhanced flash exposure compensation (up to -10 to +3 EV, this depends on the camera)
  • Power saving: Turn off display or reduce backlight in LiveView during idle times
  • extended control for ISO (down to ISO25), shutter, white balance and other image settings
  • remote release with LCD face sensor and audio trigger (without extra hardware)

4.) 400plus firmware hack (as of v2013.04.14-04) adds a load of new features and feature extensions to your EOS 400D in a similar way Magic Lantern does - it basically does not overwrite old firmware, but loads from the memory card at each startup. Among the tweaks are:
  • Spot Metering Mode: much like Partial Metering, but an even smaller area is used (3.5% vs. 9% of the viewfinder's center)
  • Auto ISO for TV, AV, M and P modes (with configurable min./max. ISO values to be used, as well as min. shutter speed and max. aperture)
  • Intervalometer (options include intervals between 1s and 5h, number of shots between 1 and 9000 and a 2s self timer)
  • Exposure Compensation values (incl. FEC, AEB, FEB and ISO bracketing) extended to ±6 (for a sequence of 9 shots)
  • ISO extended to 3000, with added fine tuning in steps of 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 EV
  • Custom White Balance and Named Color Temperatures
  • enable/disable pop-up flash completely (will not fire even pop'd up)
  • enable/disable IR remotes
  • hand gesture type shutter release (uses the display-off sensor to trigger the shutter)
5.) Cook Picture Styles were released in February 2014. It's a set of predefined settings to help preserve highlights in your photos taken in difficult lighting situations. Effectively it looks a bit like increased dynamic range. The style files can be either loaded to your camera or used in Canon's Digital Photo Professional on the RAW files (or even both). In September 2014 the author's page vanished and the pack was offered free for download.

6.) AF Sensor Types: In most if not all cases F5.6 sensors will do the main job of focusing. If you use a fast lens (F2.8 and faster), additional high sensitive sensors will add some accuracy. Linear sensors are working slower than cross sensors and can only capture horizontal details. Some camera models' cross sensors will turn into linear sensors when working with slower lenses. Examples:
EOS 400D: With slower lenses the F2.8 center cross turns into a F5.6 linear type sensor (see camera's White Paper p.10).
EOS 1D Mark IV: The F4 center cross will turn into a F8 linear, the outer F2.8 cross will turn into F5.6 linear sensors (see WP pp.13 resp. p17). Same's valid for the 1D Mark III & 1Ds Mark II. EOS 1Ds Mark III's WP is not clear in this point.
7.) When mounting any of the zoom lenses below to an EOS 40D, 50D, 60D or 7D, the peripheral AF points will not function as cross-types. Vertical and horizontal lines will be detected separately (less accurate and thus a bit slower). This is due to the optical characteristics of the lenses and the cameras' AF sensors, the issue can't be fixed. The affected lenses are:
  • EF 35-80mm F4.0-5.6
  • EF 35-80mm F4.0-5.6 II
  • EF 35-80mm F4.0-5.6 III
  • EF 35-80mm F4.0-5.6 USM
  • EF 35-105mm F4.0-5.6
  • EF 35-105mm F4.0-5.6 USM
  • EF 80-200mm F4.5-5.6 USM
  • EF 80-200mm F4.5-5.6 II
8.) In January 2012 Canon published an article about counterfeit Canon batteries, ac adapters and a battery charger selling in various online auctions.
The counterfeits are not (yet) reported to actually cause problems, but still are of cause not genuine Canon products featuring the expected quality you'd pay them for. The following counterfeits were confirmed and pictured so far:
  • rechargeable batteries: BP-511, LP-E5, LP-E6, LP-E8, NB-4L, NB-5L, NB-7L
  • compact power adapters: CA-590, CA-590E
  • battery charger: CB-2LX (for NB-5L)
9.) Canon EOS 650D camera bodies produced within the period of 2012-05-31 to 2012-06-15 might be delivered with rubber grips turning white after some time due to super elevated use of vulcanization accelerator during production. Few costumers might show allergic reactions. Also, some of the early European 650Ds might identify as Kiss X6i in the EXIFs (concerns some within SN range of x3xxxxxxxxxx). Canon offers free replacement service for both issues. For the second issue Canon set up a website to check your serial number (you can simply check your EXIF data either :D).
10.) Canon EOS 5D Mark III issues:
  • Canon 5D Mark III bodies with SN #xxxxx1... - #xxxxx2... might come with the light leak issue: LCD backlight leaks into the metering sensor area causing wrong values displayed on the LCD (and recorded in the EXIF?). Canon offers a free service to fix the issue. If not, be referred to Roger Cicala for some inspiration.
  • Canon EF 200mm F2.0L IS USM (SN #xxxx00... - #xxxx02...) and EF 800mm F5.6L IS USM (SN #xxxx00... - #xxxx06...) show a malfunction when IS is activated during AF (IS and AF will start synchronized resulting in strange IS noise). Canon offers a free service to fix the issue.
11.) In any case with Canon EOS DSLRs it's always worth to keep the firmware up to date - or at least to keep up with the history of changes. The firmware updates usually do fix a lot of issues, if not even add extended functionality and features.
12.) Random bits on operating systems: 1000D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 40D run VxWorks, 500D and 60D run DryOS. By all its randomness (and considered the information is correct) it still refutes/qualifies the sometimes to be read assumptions that a) Magic Lantern only deals with DryOS models (40D runs VxWorks, beta available), b) Canon switched to DryOS in late 2007 (1000D announced in 06.2008). The latter assumed, 5D running a ML stable adds to a).
