The Change Log: News, Additions & Supplements in 2010 - Canon EOS Technoclopedia

Calling for photographers: I'm adding photographs for every camera and lens listed. Since I actually own "only" 6 or 7 lenses myself, I will need some assistance. If you like this page and the idea behind, feel free to take good quality pictures of your lenses and send them in.

Last update in 2010. Lots of small revisions and additions this time, including Canon EF production code decoding list.

2010-11-11

There isn't really anything going on at the moment, therefore no updates here. DPReview posted an indepth review for the EOS 60D. Canon announced a delay for some of their new lenses (the fisheye zoom and two tele lenses). That's it on side of facts. There is an additional rumor about an EF 100-400mm lens coming in 2011, which is somehow confirmed (it's not said, who confirmed it ... see CanonRumors.com for more). There also will be some more Zeiss lenses, but that's all more on the wishlist's side of life.

There are a lot of things changing in my real life at the moment. Things include a new camera - I just bought an EOS 5D II :) - and thus new plans to reactivate my photo blog, a new job coming along, a new home coming along and a newly awakened addiction to windsurfing, that raised since a while. Therefor I will spend less time for this project for a while. Also, to ensure its availability during moving house and stuff I will leave the mirror at Webuda in charge of everything.

and ... more code opting:

  • rewrote the Menu using CSS instead of tables in tables
  • some more bits and pieces here and there
  • Good thing about it: It's CSS.
  • Bad thing about it: That new code didn't work too well in Quirks Mode. Thus I finally completely dropped support for Scrollbar Color Styles for Opera, since Opera only supports them in Quirks Mode. I really feel sorry for that, since I both like Opera and Scrollbar Styles (that said, I could do well without lame Firefox instead).

HTML Code Opting again:

  • optimized the XTHF scripting stuff a bit (the script I use to keep the table headers in sight when scrolling down)
  • put some layout stuff into css and saved some more bits
  • finished "tagging" the picture section for Google & co
  • Google Site Search was removed, never worked like expected

New Additions:

The first bunch of Samyang 14mm F2.8 duplicates became available:

  • Polar 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC
  • Rokinon 14mm F2.8 ED Aspherical IF
  • Walimex Pro 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC

Bower and Falcon were the first to list them. Bower annonced a 14mm F2.5 a good while ago, while now they do announce a 14mm F2.8 (not that it will matter, I just mention it out of curiosity). Falcon had it on their website with the first Samyang announcements in 2009 already and lenstip.com still has a pic and sample shots of it as a first test, but for now it's disappeared from Falcon's pages. Lenstip claims to have received the sample from FoxFoto, well ... bad people claim lenstip belongs to FoxFoto ;).

Vivitar and Opteka don't seem to care about a release for now.

More News:

  • Bower SFD52 dual flash / ring flash was released

2010-06-18

Just stumbled across another worthy third party flash listing at dpanswers.com.

Additions:

  • Brilliant Multiplex MXU
  • Godox Reemix RMI
  • YongNuo YN465, YN467 and YN468 Speedlites
  • Zeikos ZE-440EX, ZE-680EX and ZE-MR26EX

2010-06-13

HTML Code Opting:

  • Just revised some of the HTML and JPG code to speed up site loading processes. Most of the .js code is now included with each page to lower the number of server requests per page load, also sent all the jpg files through JPG & PNG Stripper (it deletes Exif data, color profile etc. and thus shrinks files to a serious amount ... from my understanding, if you edit everything in sRGB before, there will not be a difference in onscreen viewing). Hope it helps.
  • Process Logs now open in popup windows.
  • Technoclopedia tag addded to all page headers' title sections. I'm curious whether Google will alter search result listing for strings like EOS Tec etc.

Server News:

  • My own server is (and hopefully stays) back to normal business, that means the http://technoclopedia-canon-eos.com root addy is fully and exclusively working again. I left a referrer at the webuda servers. Google labs doesn't show faster access times (opposite is the case), so I don't see an advantage to keep it up as regular mirror.

2010-05-20

General News:

  • Maybe some of you might have noticed the recent change of internal adresses (the webuda.com part): 2 weeks ago I catched some really freaky virus and had to do the Format C:\ type of rescue action. Since then I decided to upgrade my server hardware, so some flaws in accessibility were to be expected. Thus I moved the page over to some webspace for the meantime.
Please do NOT bookmark these links, I will take it down again, after the server is running properly again in a few days.

Rant of the day:

  • Yes, hey ... I love that kind of BOFH stuff. Photodo webmasters just played russian roulette with all their product IDs resulting in links formerly leading to correct lenses now leading to everything else but what you are looking for. Great job, guys. Thanks a lot for making the web a bit more "flexible". Btw. ... that color scheme still is grandma's favorite.
Well, I changed all Photodo links to lead to their site search, since they don't even provide a usefull site index. Can't afford the time at the mo to look up all the correct links again. Sorry for that.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I still have problems to get the main content of the Tech Section (Canon EOS equipment and EF / AF lenses) delivered via Google serch results. Thus I tried something new and changed the address to http://technoclopedia-canon-eos.com. You can still use the old addy, but I recommend to update your links and bookmarks for faster access. Otherwise you will go through a redirector each time.

2010-02-27

Yeah, long time no see ... but not many things actually happened.

  • Canon released the EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM in January and the EOS 550D in February. That's the only news, that indeed happened. The rest are (still very interesting) announcements for the future:

  • Cosina will release a new Voigtländer series 90mm F3.5 SLII Close Focus lens.
  • Samyang announced the final release of that new 14mm F2.8 ED Aspherical IF for March (that one was first expected for winter last year).
  • Sigma announced a bunch of new lenses at the recently held PMA: an 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM, a 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM, a 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG APO OS HSM, a 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM and an 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM. No marketing dates are known, but expect them sometime this year, since they are already listed in Sigma's lens lineup.
  • Tokina also announced a new 16-28mm F2.8 SD (IF) FX superwide zoom lens at PMA, but they couldn't even show a working demo version of it nor tell any tech specs. Be prepared, but don't count on it. Iirc Tokina announced a few lenses in the past this way, that were never released or at least took years to be released. But after all they are kinda overdue with new releases.

More additions:

  • finally found custom made pictures of the Photex 80mm F2.8 S&T-Lens proving its existence, added

2010-01-03

Happy new year all. I'm pretty lazy at the moment, although I should postprocess and upload the latest equipment shots. But hey ... this update is about the 2009 access stats only:

I'm missing logs about January and almost the whole February, too. So this is only to be taken as approximately as always.

  • there were 633753 total requests including 188606 page requests
  • 19884 different IPs were recorded - the peak per week I recognized was 950 in the first half of December
  • 8.65GB were uploaded (sent), while the total disk space of the project is 230MB
