  • Dog Schidt lenses are produced by Richard Gale Optics UK.
  • From the manufacturer's homepage: "The Flare Factory 58 is made using salvaged optical components from the former USSR. Each lens is meticulously dissembled, cleaned and reassembled using uprated mechanical parts and modern lubricants. Since each lens is made to order we can configure your lens with a number of special treatments. These include oval apertures (producing oval defocus distortion), removal of optical coatings (affecting contrast), careful degradation of optical surfaces (promoting off axis flaring/rainbow fans), application of light sensitive coloured pigments (these react to light levels in a scene and create dynamic shifts in the colour rendering of the image - since the effects are more prominent in the shadows and midtones the effect is different to that of a front mounted gel filter - the result is very similar to the affects of using expired film stock where colour shift is often unpredictable and dependent on the extent of expiration and how the stock is exposed), external finish (brushed aluminium, gunmetal, matte powder coatings, RAT (faux rusty look)).
  • Gale Optics offer some attachement lenses, that can be screwed into the front accessory thread of the 58FF:
  • DSO FF38: 38mm F2.2 effectively
  • DSO FF88: 88mm F2.4 effectively
  • Gale Optics produce more of these lenses for PL mount and offer a PL-EF adapter to use these lenses on EOS cameras. Check their homepage for details.

  • For this lens 2 product codes are available: an L200F1.4 [a.k.a. Cat200] and an L200F1.4-E [a.k.a. Cat200-EOS]. The ...-E thing was dedicated to Canon EOS and kinda looks like a package name. If so, the L200F1.4 should be the FLA part of an AstroScope with a lens being integrated and the L200F1.4-E should be a set of FLA as described and a Back Body Adapter (BBA) for Canon EOS.
  • The whole thing is won't be usable without a CIU i guess. Refer to System Cameras > Still Lenses C/EF > Night Vision & SWIR/Electrophysics for more details.

  • Buying an Exakta AF lens is probably the worst decision you can come to. Although being Sigma and Cosina rebadges, to me it seems they didn't even match the required quality and durability criteria to be sold under the OEM or other rebadgers' labels. I held a few used Exaktas in my hands and approx. 70% of them were mechanically either broken or totally creepy (I've tested a lot of used lenses - apart from Sigma a normal ratio will be at around 2-5% creep). The rest was still creepy by nature of the thing it seemed, leaving the impression of absolute bottom quality even amongst the relabelers. Don't deal with Exaktas.
  • Some statistical facts about production years: The Sigma lenses, which the Exaktas above are based on, were produced by Sigma starting from 1988 to 2001 in total, 4 or 5 of them were added in 1995. Only 3 lenses were added to the portfolio later than 1994 (AF 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 Asph., AF 70-210mm F4.0-5.6 and SAF 70-300mm). Of those 3 lenses 2 were discontinued by Sigma after 1998 (28-80mm F3.5-5.6 Asph. and AF 70-210mm F4.0-5.6), the third model was discontinued in 1998. The rest of the Sigma originals was only produced until 1995 or even earlier.
Again: This is statistics. Sigma might well have discontinued the models under the Sigma brand while continuing to deliver Exakta branded models to whomever owned the brand by that time (see next note). And there are no confirmed dates for the Cosinas available at all. Just from looking at the confirmed dates implicates, that Exakta rebadges were mostly produced from 1988 to the later mid 90's.
  • This gets us to the ownership question: Exakta is a company with a long and great history, though the greatness was long gone, when Canon EOS was born. I'll only cover the Canon EOS relevant part here. Exakta ownership was registered by Exakta Foto AG Zurich, Switzerland from 1984 until 1995 (that company existed from 1971 - 2001). According to the US IPO (Intellectual Property Office) Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH (a.k.a. Schneider-Kreuznach) filed a registration in 1996, which was executed in 1999. The trademark itself was first registered to wholesalers Exakta Foto GmbH & Co. Vertriebs KG Berlin, Germany in 1995, before Schneider finally took over in 2001 as well (according to the USPTO (Patent & Trademark Office)). I'm not aware of any connections between Schneider and Exakta Foto wholesalers, but it's hard to find out anything there at all. The filing correspondent was the same in both cases, which doesn't mean too much.

  • The full company's name is Anhui ChangGeng Optical Technology Co. Ltd..
  • There is a weird similarity in what happens when trying to send them email to what happens after sending email to Zhongyi Optical & Electronic Co., Ltd. (see Mitakon lenses) - you get the same error in response. Coincidence, same stupid webmaster or defacto even same company?
  • They published some exemplary shots on their homepage, which I found kind of suspicious. On the jpg files all EXIF data was deleted, and one of them shows 2 flares - one in form of a square, the other one in form of a pentagon (which is totally impossible to be genuine of a lens with a 14 bladed iris).
The additionally provided RAW files have EXIF data, which names either 40mm or 50mm lenses been used at quiet curious apertures (40mm F13, 40mm F18, 40mm F20, 50mm F0 (all taken with the same EOS 60D) and 50mm F2 (7 pics taken with another 60D (different serial number)). Recording dates do not add any sense either.
Considered the lenses are dumb mount lenses this either means lenses with dandelion chips have been used (or the lenses were even mounted via adapters) and the chips have been reprogrammed all the time - or all this is just plain fake. I'm eager to see some real world tests of this lens. The available review looks promising after all.

  • Meyer Optik Görlitz was once a big name within photo optical industries. With the end of WWII and their inclusion into VEB Pentacon Dresden and later on into VEB Carl Zeiss Jena they started to become history though, totally fading away in 1991 after a short attempt to revive the company.
In 2014 the german net AG (being the new owner of the brand) together with the affilliated Globell B.V. (PR) and Globell Germany (lens design) revived the brand and introduced themself with the release of the 85mm Figmentum and Somnium. The lenses were claimed to be "Made in Germany". Globell was not keen to publish any more detail about the production grounds and external suppliers at that point. According to their staff at Photokina at least some portions of the glass are of russian origin. The main focus was not to become sharpness, but bokeh quality.
By 2015 rumours became quite heavy about the new lenses just being rebadges of russian (e.g. Helios-40-2) and chinese (e.g. Zhong Yi/Mitakon) lenses with slight changes in outer appearance. The use of the label "Made in Germany" seems to be solely based on brand management, conception, assembly and fine adjustments done on german ground. Sources are not too specific about their sources though. Direct indepth comparisons with the targeted OEM products are also missing (physical as well as optical).
According to the company's statements you pay for "lenses [...] assembled in Germany using the best, globally available components [...]", "strict quality controls and minimal manufacturing tolerances [...]. Every Meyer-Optik-Görlitz lens is supplied with an individual testing certificate and a five-year guarantee."
Keep in mind that manufacturing the same lens up to higher optical quality standards is just a matter of cost (see Cosina/Zeiss or Cosina/Voigtländer), which should also be true for Zhong Yi. Judging from its outter appearance the results would still look identical. Similar arguments can be brought up against the Helios arguments. Simply read the story about the Hartblei/Zeiss lenses (which once originated from russian mechanics).
  • The lenses do not feature any electronic coupling. They also come in Nikon F and M42 mounts.
  • When first announced the 85mm Figmentum was planned to become an 80mm F1.8 and the 85mm Somnium was planned to become an 85mm F1.4. Those early samples were also presented at Photokina in 2014.
The Figmentum 2.8/135 wasn't announced at all. It just appeared, as far as I can tell during March 2015, as being available since February 2015.

They had been merged into OmegaSatter (according to their company history during 2004 already), who continued to sell the Phoenix lenses until they sold out (most of them did until 2008).

  • The Xenon-Emeralds are industrial lenses with extended IR transmission capabilities (400-1000nm). Similar to the Zeiss lenses they come with lockable aperture and focus. The default mount is N/F or V48, but Canon EF is possible on request as well. These lenses are supposed to deliver an equal MTF across the full image circle.
  • According to the technical blueprints of the Xenon-Emeralds it shall be difficult to mount the 28mm, 50mm and 60mm lenses to SLRs by traditional means. The rear element protrudes too far into the body (see length vs. length total in the table above) and is furthermore 40mm in diameter, which is simply too thick even to mount it with locked mirror. To mount the 50mm lens to DSLRs some kind of modified extension tube will be necessary. Let's point out, that the lenses can't just be mounted to SLRs but - and that's their primary use - as well to industrial camera heads, which also are available with Canon EF mount. The 80mm or 100mm Xenon-E's do not bring up this issue.

  • Photo & Consumer Investments Pte Ltd., Asian/Oceanian distributor for Cosina lenses from Singapore, also offered those lenses under their own brand called Vitacon. The company is still in business, owning the Vitacon brand since 1983 (with a full Cosina lens portfolio currently online, although they are out of production since years). The above lenses are just a selection that I could verify to have been sold as Vitacons. Vitacon's product listing for "Cosina/Vitacon Auto Focus SLR Lenses" does list almost all Cosina lenses ever produced, further inlcuding the 19-35mm F3.5-5.6, the 28-105mm F2.8-3.8, the 28-300mm F4.0-5.6, the two 70-210mm lenses F4.5-5.6 and F2.8-4.0, the 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 and the 100-400mm F4.5-6.7.
